0 Overeating impairs brain insulin function can lead to diabetes and obesity

New research from Mount Sinai School of Medicine sheds light on how overeating can cause a malfunction in brain insulin signaling, and lead to obesity and diabetes. Christoph Buettner, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease) and his research team found that overeating impairs the ability of brain insulin to suppress the breakdown of fat in adipose tissue.

In previous research Dr. Buettners team established that brain insulin is what suppresses lipolysis, a process during which triglycerides in fat tissue are broken down and fatty acids are released. When lipolysis is unrestrained, fatty acid levels are elevated, which can initiate and worsen obesity and type 2 diabetes. The current study is published online in The Journal of Biological Chemistry. The first study was published in the February 2, 2011 issue of Cell Metabolism.

"We are interested in understanding why people who eat too much eventually develop diabetes. Our recent studies suggest that once you overeat, your brain develops insulin resistance. Since brain insulin controls lipolysis in adipose tissue by reducing sympathetic nervous system outflow to adipose tissue, brain insulin resistance causes increased spillage of fatty acids from adipose tissue into the blood stream," said Dr. Buettner.

Increased fatty acids induce inflammation and that, in turn, can further worsen insulin resistance, which is the core defect in type 2 diabetes. Fatty acids also increase glucose production in the liver which raises blood glucose levels, Dr. Buettner explained. "Its a vicious cycle and while we knew that this can begin with overeating, this study shows that it is really the brain that is harmed first which then starts the downward spiral."

In this study, researchers fed rats a high-fat diet comprised of 10 percent lard for three consecutive days. This increased their daily caloric intake by up to 50 percent compared to the control rats that were fed a regular low fat diet. The researchers then infused a tiny amount of insulin into the brains of both groups of rats that they had shown in earlier studies to suppress release of glucose from the liver and fatty acids from fat tissue. They found that overeating impaired the ability of brain insulin to suppress glucose release from the liver and lipolysis in fat tissue. Similarly, short-term overeating in humans is known to produce comparable insulin resistance which could be explained by brain insulin resistance.

"When you overeat, your brain becomes unresponsive to these important clues such as insulin, which puts you on the road to diabetes. We believe that what happens in rats also happens in humans" said Dr. Buettner.

Dr. Buettners team plans to investigate methods of improving brain insulin function that could restrain lipolysis and improve insulin resistance.

0 Beware daily soda consumption can be caused diabetes!

Drink 300 ml of soda every day itll catch type 2 diabetes, according to new research.

The study mentions that exactly 300 ml of soda daily consumption increases the risk of type 2 diabetes by 18 percent over 16 years. While if the raised portion - 300 ml twice a day - not just diabetes that threatened, but also the risk of stroke increased by 18 percent.

Results of this study also examined several other risk factors of diabetes, such as physical activity, BMI (body mass index), and total daily calorie intake.

The study, reported in the journal Diabetologia is also consistent with previous studies conducted by experts from the United States.

A total of 27,000 respondents from eight European countries were included in this study. Some of them suffer from type 2 diabetes, while the rest do not. Everything included in the study to analyze the interaction between diet, environmental factors, the risk of cancer, and other disease risks.

As reported by My Health News Daily, although the soda you drink is the kind of diet, the risk of diabetes attack still haunt. However, respondents who are obese tend to be at higher risk due to greater consumption of soda.

Nevertheless, the consumption of healthy foods like vegetables and fruits, exercise, and weight loss can prevent diabetes risk, according to the Mayo Clinic.

0 Chat via mobile phone can make hypertension

A studies suggest that talking via cell phone can increase blood pressure.

Researchers from Guglielmo da Saliceto Hospital in Italy involving 94 men and women who have low to moderate blood pressure in this study.

Respondents were randomly assigned to receive a phone call from his cell phone. While sitting in a chair in a room, they were left chatting and checked his blood pressure.

The result, shown an increase in blood pressure from 121/77 to 129/82 during the talk with mobile phones.

But it only happens to someone who often chat via mobile phone more than 30 minutes each day.

Although still not sure why talking by mobile phone can make hypertension, chief researcher Dr. G. Crippa suspect it happens because of an unusual disorder that is received by a person through a phone call.

"Our respondents were mostly young men and women. Seems like they are not accustomed to be disturbed by calls via mobile phones," said the researcher, as quoted by The Daily News.

The results are then reported to the meeting of the American Society of Hypertension in San Francisco.

0 Overeating Can Double the Risk of Memory Loss Leading to Cognitive Decline

Compelling research will be presentedat the American Academy of Neurologys 64th Annual Meeting to explain how overeating may double the risk of memory loss, or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), among people aged 70 and older. Cognitive decline threatens the very nature of who we are and how we interact with others and the number of individuals experiencing the normal loss of thought and memory has been increasing over the past half century.

Loss of cognition and early stage dementia are both precursors to the devastating condition diagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease, said to affect nearly half of those aged 80 and above. Calorie restriction initiated early in life may be one of the most effective tools available to combat cognitive decline and memory loss leading to dementia.

High Caloric Intake is Shown to Double the Risk of Cognitive Decline in Seniors
The studywas conducted using 1,233 individuals aged 70 to 89 who were free of dementia and living in Minnesota. Each participant filled out a questionnaire detailing the number of calories they ate or drank, and were then broken into three groups based on total caloric consumption. A third of the participants consumed between 600 and 1,526 calories per day, the middle third ranged between 1,526 and 2,143 and the top third consumed between 2,143 and 6,000 calories per day.

The lead study author, Dr. Yonas Geda noted of the initial findings, “We observed a dose-response pattern which simply means; the higher the amount of calories consumed each day, the higher the risk of MCI.” The team discovered that those consuming the highest number of calories (2,143 calories per day and up) more than doubled their risk for developing MCI. The researchers adjusted for history of stroke, diabetes, amount of education, and other factors that can affect risk of memory loss to reach their conclusion.

Dietary Restriction Lowers Oxidative Damage to Delicate Brain Structures
It is important to note that participants in the lower two-thirds experienced no increased risk of MCI, leading to the conclusion that the body is able to metabolize calories to an individual set point before cognition is impaired. Dr. Geda commented “excessive caloric intake may lead to oxidative damage leading to structural changes in the brain… cutting calories and eating foods that make up a healthy diet may be a simpler way to prevent memory loss as we age”.

It comes as no surprise to those following healthy lifestyle principles that caloric intake is yet another lifestyle factor found to affect the brain and impact normal thinking and memory processes as we age. Researchers have known for decades that calorie restriction is the only demonstrated mechanism to extend healthy lifespan, as it is shown to stress the body’s natural survival mechanism toward longevity. Cutting 20% of your daily calories in the form of hydrogenated and trans fats, ined carbohydrates and excess animal protein will not only help you maintain a normal body weight, but may help prevent cognitive decline in your senior years.

0 Why Population Based Care and Disease Management Can Increase Access to Primary Care

If the population health management (PHM) service industry needed just one evidence-based medical journal article to justify its existence, it couldnt do better than this. Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, Amireh Ghorob and Thomas Bodenheimer advocate for Sharing the Care to Improve Access to Primary Care.

The authors argue there can be only one solution to the twin challenges of dwindling primary care physician (PCP) numbers and the increasing burden of chronic illness : reallocating clinical responsibilities away from PCPs to empowered non-physician team members. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to a) prescription drug monitoring, titration and renewals, b) scheduling and processing of routine blood testing (like cholesterol) and imaging studies (like mammography), and c) counseling patients about lifestyle changes, medication adherence and their perences, priorities and goals for their chronic conditions.

In order for all this to happen, Mr. Ghorob and Dr. Bodenheimer suggest two ingredients will be necessary: 1) payment orms that make teaming profitable and 2) physician compromise over their long-cherished notions of control.

Thats precisely the approach that has been used by the PHM vendors for decades.

They have nurses, they rely on the teaming, they can manage routine prescriptions, testing and counseling and they can do it for a relatively small monthly fee. Theyve also learned their lesson: the vendors are doing a much better job of navigating through the doctor-patient relationship and discerning the important differences between clinical responsibility and busy-work control.

A far less important issue is the location or level of service provided by the non-physicians.

The Disease Management Care Blog argues that sorting that out is a local decision based on physician perences, pre-existing clinical infrastructure, history and organizational culture. Highly integrated systems may per to achieve teaming by transforming their primary care sites into medical homes. Less integrated networks may per a shared services model that in or outsources the teams.

The point is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to relying on teaming to increase access to primary care. Dr. Bodenheimer has confirmed which are the basic ingredients.  Now its time for the rest of the system to figure out the details.

0 Beware heart failure can increase the risk of cancer

Beware, heart failure can increase the risk of cancer - Turns heart failure and cancer risk are related. At least thats what was discovered by researchers in Minnesota. Their latest research shows that people with heart failure are more at risk of getting cancer.

Yet these findings do not necessarily indicate evidence that heart failure, which occurs when the heart fails to pump enough blood throughout the body, can cause cancer. Scientists said it will conduct further studies to clarify the relation.

"People do not consider the link between heart failure and cancer, at least they do not expect to get cancer after diagnosis of heart failure," said researcher Dr. Adrian Hernandez of Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, as reported by Reuters.

But Dr Sudhir Kushwaha, researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester explains that the association of these two diseases are quite reasonable. This is because the organs are deprived of blood and oxygen due to heart failure might run into problems. Kushwaha emphasizes that heart failure patients should always be vigilant about any new symptoms that appear.

The results obtained after the researchers observed 961 patients with heart failure with people who do not have heart disease. After eight years, 244 people were still in the study diagnosed with various cancers.

After considering various factors such as the risk that participants held the weight and smoking habits, Kushwaha and colleagues found that patients with heart failure have a 68 percent chance of developing cancer is higher than participants who did not have heart failure.

Kushwaha research group revealed several reasons that could explain the link they found. Some heart medications can increase the risk of cancer, or stress, and inflammation of heart failure can also lead to cancer because the organ is starved of oxygen. In addition, the frequency of screening performed by patients with heart failure are also considered to be the cause.

0 Vitamin D Can Help Prevent Hypertension

The worlds largest study to examine the link between vitamin D levels and hypertension has found that low levels of Vitamin D can be a major cause of hypertension.

Researchers presented their findings at the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics (ESHG).

Data were gathered from 35 studies, which included more than 155,000 participants from different parts of Europe and North America.

Dr. Vimal Karani S, from the Institute of Child Health, University College London, London, UK, led the study.

Participants with high levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) had reduced blood pressure and were at a lower risk of developing hypertension.

Dr. Vimal Karani S, said:

"We knew from earlier observational studies that low 25(OH)D concentrations were likely to be associated with increases in blood pressure and hypertension, but correlation is not causality.

Additionally, randomized controlled trials of vitamin D supplementation in humans have produced inconsistent effects on cardiovascular outcomes. The whole picture was somewhat confused, and we decided to try to figure it out once and for all."

To measure the individuals vitamin D status and test for an association with blood pressure, the researchers used genetic variations called single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs as proxy markers.

For every 10% increase in 25(OH)D concentrations the researchers noted the risk of developing hypertension decreased by 8.1%.

Dr. Karani S., said that the approach they followed, called Mendelian randomization, allowed them to make accurate conclusions, "by using this approach we can determine the cause and effect and be pretty sure that weve come to the right conclusion on the subject."

The researchers said that Vitamin D deficiency is a very common problem in the Western world, particularly because obesity can cause Vitamin D deficiency and obesity levels are highest in Western countries, according to a study published in a recent issue of PLoS Medicine

People with high levels of vitamin D in their blood enjoy several benefits, apart from improved bone health. Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine reported in PLOS ONE that people with high levels of vitamin D have significantly better immunity and a reduced risk of several diseases.

Vitamin D insufficiency (between 21-29 ng/mL) and vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL) lead to a heightened risk of:

Dr. Karani said that the study provides further data to support the importance of vitamin D. It suggests that vitamin D supplements or food fortification can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

He concluded:

"We now intend to continue this work by examining the causal relationship between vitamin D status and other cardiovascular disease-related outcomes such as lipid-related phenotypes, for example, cholesterol, inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein, and type 2 diabetes and markers of glucose metabolism.

We believe that we still have a lot to find out about the effect of Vitamin D deficiency on health, and we now know that we have the tools to do so."

0 2 Pressure Points that Can Relieve Your Stress

The fortunate thing about stress is that there always seems to be a way for somebody to be able to deal with it.  Although not every natural way of dealing with stress is going to work for each individual, it always helps for you to be experimenting with different ways of successfully overcoming the stress or at least helping yourself to cope with it for awhile.  One of the things that you may be interested in trying is acupressure.  This is something that is very similar to acupuncture, as it uses the same basic principles, but you will not be inserting any needles into your skin whenever doing it.

There are two natural acupressure points that can help you to overcome your stress in many cases.  The first of these is located directly between the eyes in a soft region that you will be able to feel with the tip of your finger.  The second one is on the crown of your head, a small soft spot that is also easy to identify once you reach the right point.  You can help to overcome stress by applying light pressure to each of these points and holding it for 30 seconds or longer.  It helps to release chemicals into the body and to allow free energy to flow so that the stress can be alleviated to a certain extent.
You can do this at any time that you are feeling stressed out but it may be difficult for you to do it in a public area.  If you find that you are stressing out in public, perhaps you could try pressing on each of these points separately, as I can also help to give you a free flow of energy.  It may take a little bit of practice, but once you get the right touch you can use it easily to overcome a stressful situation.

0 Cycling Over Five Hours can Interfere of Sperm

Those who have an active lifestyle with regular exercise would always feel how it impacts and benefits for health. For the men, in particular, during this exercise are believed to help boost and maintain stamina.

However, when associated with fertility rates, exercise was not necessarily the same applies. Research in the United States indicates, sports activities do not give any impact to both the quality and quantity of sperm in most men.

Even so, there is one exception, namely those who like cycling. Data research shows that men who pedal a bicycle at least five hours a week appears to have fewer sperm and the number of active sperm is lower than their more sedentary.

The tendency is that most types of exercise had no effect on semen quality. Only a few specific types of sports and sports that require a high level of intensity that has impact.

Previous research indicates that the level of competitive athletes suspected to have problems with sperm quality. To assess the truth of sport relationship with sperm quality, researchers conducted a study involving thousands of men. Research reports were published in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

For the study, researchers followed 2200 men who did the examination of sperm in the three fertility clinics. Respondents were asked about general health and physical activity. To eliminate the influence of other factors that may affect the health of the sperm so that exercise becomes an independent factor, the researchers used statistical tool to move the influence of the use of multivitamins, weight, blood pressure, choice of underwear, and so forth.

From the research results revealed that men who exercise regularly, even fairly diligent, tend not to have a problem with quality or quantity of sperm than those who never exercise.

However, when looking specifically at the type of sport, a man who claimed to regularly cycling five hours in a week tend to have the quality and quantity of sperm are low.

Among men who did not exercise regularly, 23 percent have a low sperm count and 27 percent have poor sperm movement. Among men cycling at least five hours a week, almost 31 percent had low sperm counts and 40 percent by the quantity of sperm is less good.

Too early to tell if cycling activities on a regular basis can cause problems with sperm. Further studies need to be done to strengthen these findings before then considered to be the cause.

According to him, it is possible that male respondents were included in this study are not representative of the population in general. Because the male respondents were those who went to the clinic so that the most likely to have problems with sperm.
