0 Although never ill with cancer she had a chance to get pregnant

Although never ill with cancer, she had a chance to get pregnant - A study says that women who have had cancer as a child and was successfully recovered at high risk of experiencing infertility. But they still have a chance of getting pregnant.

Research in the journal Lancet Oncology was also found about two-thirds of women whove had cancer once was able to get pregnant.

According to researchers from Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, a chance to get pregnant for the ex the same amount of cancer patients with healthy women undergoing infertility treatment.

As reported by Medical News Today, a total of 3,531 women aged 18-39 years involved in the study. Researchers also found 64 percent of respondents managed to get pregnant despite never once had cancer while still a child.

"This is the first study to discuss the chances of getting pregnant for women who previously had cancer as a child," said Dr. Sara Barton, the head researcher.

Counsel and infertility treatment is one way to increase the chances of getting pregnant, according to investigators.

0 Multivitamins with minerals may protect older women with invasive breast cancer

Findings from a study involving thousands of postmenopausal women suggest that women who develop invasive breast cancer may benefit from taking supplements containing both multivitamins and minerals. The new research, published today in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, found that the risk of dying from invasive breast cancer was 30 percent lower among multivitamin/mineral users compared with nonusers.

"Our study offers tentative but intriguing evidence that multivitamin/mineral supplements may help older women who develop invasive breast cancer survive their disease," said Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller, Ph.D., lead author of the study and distinguished university professor emerita of epidemiology and population health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Multivitamin/mineral supplements are the most commonly consumed dietary supplements among U.S. adults. They usually contain 20-30 vitamins and minerals, often at levels of 100 percent of U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowances or less, and the usual label recommendation is to take them daily.

The research was conducted as part of the Womens Health Initiative Clinical Trials and the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) Observational Study. Combined, the two studies include data from 161,608 postmenopausal women ages 50 to 79 when they first joined the study. These women were enrolled at 40 clinical centers throughout the United States during the years 1993-1998.

The current study focused on 7,728 participants who were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during the WHI and were followed for an average of seven years after their diagnosis. Invasive breast cancer is defined as cancer that has spread outside the membrane of the milk glands or ducts and into the breast tissue. Two common types of invasive breast cancer are invasive ductal carcinoma and infiltrating lobular carcinoma.

After enrolling in the WHI and during repeated follow-up visits, all participants provided extensive information about their health including whether or not they had taken a multivitamin/mineral supplement at least once a week during the prior two weeks.

About 38percent of the 7,728 women who developed invasive breast cancer during the WHI were using the supplements. The vast majority were taking the supplements before their breast-cancer diagnosis. A comparison of mortality rates revealed that women with invasive breast cancer who took multivitamin/mineral supplements were 30 percent less likely to die from their cancers than women with invasive breast cancer who hadnt taken the supplements.

Could differences between the multivitamin/mineral users and nonusers account for this finding? The researchers looked at many possible confounding factors including additional supplements that the women took, their smoking status, education, race/ethnicity, weight, depression, alcohol use, physical activity, age at breast cancer diagnosis, and diabetes. The association between regular use of multivitamin/mineral supplements and reduced risk of death persisted even after these factors were taken into account.

"Controlling for these other factors strengthens our confidence that the association we observed – between taking multivitamin/mineral supplements and lowering breast-cancer mortality risk among postmenopausal women with invasive breast cancer – is a real one," said Dr. Wassertheil-Smoller, who also holds the Dorothy and William Manealoff Foundation and Molly Rosen Chair in Social Medicine Emerita. "But further studies are needed to confirm whether there truly is a cause-and-effect relationship here. And our findings certainly cannot be generalized to premenopausal women diagnosed with invasive cancer or to other populations of women."

0 What is colon cancer

The colon is the longest part of the large intestine and the lowest part of the digestive system. The colon makes up the majority of the large intestine, approximately six feet in length. The colon is an important part of the digestive system, and as such, it has a major role in helping the body absorb nutrients, minerals, and water.

The colon also helps rid the body of waste in the form of stool through rectum. The last six inches or so of the large intestine are the rectum and the anal canal (Anus). Colon cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the colon.

Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last several inches of the colon. Together, theyre often erred to as colorectal cancers.

Colon cancer is quite common, being the third most common cancer in men and women in the U.S. About 150,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with colon cancer and colorectal cancer each year. These are the second leading causes of cancer deaths in both men and women. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 53,196 Americans died from colon cancer in 2006 (the most recent year for available data).

What Exactly is colon cancer?

Cancer means out-of-control cell growth anywhere in your body, and colon cancer forms when this uncontrolled cell growth starts in the large intestine. At first some noncancerous (benign) clumps of cells called adenomatous polyps form on the inner walls of the large intestine. If these polyps left untreated, they may grow into malignant colon cancers over time. So it is better to get them removed during colonoscopy. Colon cancer cells will invade and damage healthy tissues near the tumor causing many health complications.

After malignant cancerous tumors form, the cancerous cells may travel through the blood and lymph systems, spreading to other parts of the body. These cancer cells can grow in several places, invading and destroying other healthy tissues throughout the body. This process itself is called metastasis, which is a very serious condition that is very difficult to treat.

What are the causes of colon cancer?

No specific causes are identified for colon cancer. When the cells uncontrollably grow and do not die, it results in cancer. There are certain factors which increase the risk of colon cancer. They include:

  • Genetics -20 % of colon cancers are caused by inherited mutations in the genes
  • Polyps- Adenomas and inflammatory polyps may become cancerous.
  • African-American race. African-Americans have a greater risk of colon cancer than do people of other races.
  • Inflammatory intestinal conditions. Chronic inflammatory diseases of the colon, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease, can increase your risk of colon cancer
  • Low-fiber, high-fat diet. Colon cancer and rectal cancer may be associated with a diet low in fiber and high in fat and calories. Research in this area has had mixed results. Some studies have found an increased risk of colon cancer in people who eat diets high in red meat.
  • A sedentary lifestyle. If youre inactive, youre more likely to develop colon cancer. Getting regular physical activity may reduce your risk of colon cancer.
  • Diabetes. People with diabetes and insulin resistance may have an increased risk of colon cancer.
  • Obesity. People who are obese have an increased risk of colon cancer and an increased risk of dying of colon cancer when compared with people considered normal weight.
  • Smoking. People who smoke cigarettes may have an increased risk of colon cancer.
  • Alcohol. Heavy use of alcohol may increase your risk of colon cancer.
  • Radiation therapy for cancer. Radiation therapy directed at the abdomen to treat previous cancers may increase the risk of colon cancer.
Symptoms of colon cancer?

Cancer symptoms are quite varied and depend on where the cancer is located, where it has spread, and how big the tumor is. It is common for people with colon cancer to experience no symptoms in the earliest stages of the disease. However, when the cancer grows, symptoms include:
  • A change in your bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool
  • Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas or pain
  • A feeling that your bowel doesnt empty completely
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Iron deficiency (Anemia)
Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. When symptoms appear, theyll likely vary, depending on the cancers size and location in your large intestine.

Are you at risk?

If you notice any symptoms of colon cancer, such as blood in your stool or a persistent change in bowel habits. Talk to your doctor about when you should begin screening for colon cancer. Your doctor may recommend more frequent or earlier screening if you have family history of the disease. Where as, guidelines generally recommend colon cancer screenings begin at age 50.

If your doctor suspects you may have colon cancer, youll likely be erred to specialists who treat colon cancer. Those specialist physicians will request a complete physical exam as well as personal and family medical histories.

Tests to detect (find) and diagnose colon cancer.

Fortunately colon cancer is both preventable and highly treatable when detected early. With screening colon cancer can be detected before symptoms develop. This is when the cancer is most curable. Physicians may conduct a series of tests such as, CBC and liver function test, digital rectal exam, fecal occult blood test, sigmodoscopy, biopsy, barium enema and colonoscopy.

Diagnoses are usually made after the physician conducts a colonoscopy or a barium enema x-ray (lower G series). Only colonoscopy can see the entire colon. This is the best screening test for colon cancer.

Stages of colon cancer:
If you are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, more tests will be done to see if the cancer has spread. This is called staging. CT or MRI scans of the abdomen, pelvic area, chest, or brain may be used to stage the cancer. Sometimes, PET scans are also used.

Stages of colon cancer are:
Stage 0: Very early cancer on the innermost layer of the intestine
Stage I: Cancer is in the inner layers of the colon
Stage II: Cancer has spread through the muscle wall of the colon
Stage III: Cancer has spread to the lymph nodes
Stage IV: Cancer has spread to other organs outside the colon

Blood tests to detect tumor markers, including carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and CA 19-9, may help your physician follow you during and after treatment.

How is colon cancer treated?

Cancer treatment depends on the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer (how much it has spread), age, health status, and additional personal characteristics. There is no single treatment for cancer, but the most common options for colon cancer are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Treatments seek to remove the cancer and/or relieve painful symptoms that the cancer is causing.

Surgery
Stage 0 colon cancer may be treated by removing the cancer cells. This is done using colonoscopy. For stages I, II, and III cancer, more extensive surgery is needed to remove the part of the colon that is cancerous. This surgery is called colon resection.

Chemotherapy
Almost all patients with stage III colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery for 6 - 8 months. This is called adjuvant chemotherapy. The drug 5-fluorouracil can increase the chance of a cure in certain patients.

Chemotherapy is also used to improve symptoms and prolong survival in patients with stage IV colon cancer. Irinotecan, oxaliplatin, capecitabine, and 5-fluorouracil are the three most commonly used drugs. Monoclonal antibodies, including cetuximab (Erbitux), panitumumab (Vectibix), bevacizumab (Avastin), and other drugs have been used alone or in combination with chemotherapy.

You may receive just one type, or a combination of these drugs. There is some debate as to whether patients with stage II colon cancer should receive chemotherapy after surgery. You should discuss this with your oncologist.

Radiation therapy:
Radiation therapy is sometimes used in patients with colon cancer. It is usually used in combination with chemotherapy for patients with stage III rectal cancer. For patients with stage IV disease that has spread to the liver, treatments directed at the liver can be used. This may include:

  • Burning the cancer (ablation)
  • Delivering chemotherapy or radiation directly into the liver
  • Freezing the cancer (cryotherapy)
  • Surgery
Alternative Treatments

Although there is no scientific evidence to show that alternative treatments can treat or cure colon cancer, certain therapies can improve the quality of life of cancer patients. Activities such as art, dance and music can shift focus away from the disease and the treatment process, and help reduce stress.

In addition, exercise and meditation can improve mood and appetite. Support groups are also a helpful resource for coping with colon cancer. Information on local groups can be found through organizations including the Colon Cancer Alliance, Cancer Care and the American Cancer Society.

0 The 3 Main Types of Skin Cancer

The 3 Main Types of Skin Cancer - Contrary to what people think that there is just one type of skin cancer, there are apparently many types of skin cancers. They all have their unique symptoms, risk factors and different characteristics. Here are the three major types of skin cancers.

Basal Cell Carcinoma
This is the most common type of skin cancer. It is also less serious than other types. This cancer can be distinguished by its appearance, which resembles small raised bumps that have a fleshy feel. The main cause attributed to this cancer is the harmful UV rays. It normally attacks the skin on the face, head, neck and on the hands, since the skin on these body areas is directly exposed to the sun. If detected early, basal cell carcinoma can easily be treated. It is common among the members of Caucasians, especially those with a lighter skin complexion.
Squamos Cell Carcinoma anda Basell Cell Carcinoma
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
This type of cancer is also known as non-melanoma carcinoma. It is the second most common type. The cancer can easily be distinguished by presence of many nodules on the skin. The nodules are scaly and red skin patches. It is also as a result of harmful UV rays. Just like basal cell carcinoma, this cancer also attacks members of the Caucasians who have a lighter skin complexion. The best defense against this cancer is to regularly apply sunscreens on the affected skin areas. This cancer is more serious than basal cell carcinoma due to the fact that, it can easily spread through other vital body organs. The cure rate of this cancer is relatively low as compared to basal cell carcinoma. It is also rated among the skin cancers which claim the highest number of lives in the world.

Malignant Melanoma
This is arguably the most serious type. It attacks (melanocytes), which are the skin cells which are responsible for melanin production. Though it is the rarest type of skin cancer, it accounts for more than 75% of the death cases occasioned by skin cancers. It can also change the appearance of birthmarks, which are also known as moles. People who stand a high risk of getting malignant melanoma include those with a light and fair skin complexion, light hair or eyes, birthmarks and people suffering from albinism. The risk of getting this cancer can drastically be lowered by applying sunscreens. One can also wear protective clothing such as hats, long sleeves and long pants.

0 Higher Vitamin D Blood Levels Help Prevent Colon Cancer

Just in case you needed more proof that low blood levels of vitamin D represent a significant health concern, researchers publishingin the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition demonstrate that small increases in the sunshine vitamin can add precious years to your life. For nearly a decade scientific evidence has been mounting to show that the vast majorities of adults (and many children) are grossly deficient in circulating blood levels of vitamin D.

Further proof is documented in the PLoS One journal to show the precise cellular mechanism that helps vitamin D dramatically lower the risk of colon cancer. The bottom line is simple: check your vitamin D blood saturation with an inexpensive test and make the necessary adjustments to live a healthier and longer life.

Doubling Average Vitamin D Levels Could Cut World Death Rate by Twenty Percent
Using epidemiologic studies, Dr. W.B. Grant of the Sunlight, Nutrition and Health Research Center in San Francisco found that doubling the serum blood concentration of vitamin D could increase average life expectancy by two years. Dr. Grant and his team identified the major diseases that responded to increased levels of vitamin D. They then compared mortality rates to six identified regions around the country, and contrasted serum blood levels of the sunshine vitamin with disease occurrence.

After compiling all the data, the researchers found that conditions and diseases responsive to vitamin D that account for over half of the worlds mortality include cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, respiratory diseases and infections. It was determined that doubling the circulating level of vitamin D would lower the mortality rates of diseases that are sensitive to vitamin D by approximately 20 percent. Dr. Grant concluded“several ways to raise serum vitamin D include food fortification, supplementation and increased ultraviolet B exposure.”

Vitamin D Directly Correlated With Decreased Colon Cancer Risk
Researchers have known for some time that low vitamin D levels are associated with a significant increase in colon cancer cases, but have not understood the specific mechanism responsible. Now, scientists have discovered how a lack of vitamin D promotes DNA damage and colon cancer risk. Specifically, low vitamin D status instigates the development and progression of this devastating form of cancer.

Researchers have focused on a protein in intestinal epithelial cells called beta-catechin that normally helps epithelial cells bond together with other cells to form a protective barrier between the contents in your gut and the physical structure of your digestive tract. They found that when vitamin D is lacking, DNA synthesis is disrupted and beta-catechin builds up in cells, dramatically increasing the risk of colon cancer initiation.

There should be no doubt remaining that one of the most critical foundations to vibrant health is maintaining proper vitamin D blood saturation levels. Prevention is worth a pound of cure, so have your family physician run the simple and inexpensive 25 (OH)D blood test (alternatively, mail-in home testing is now a viable option), and be certain your level runs between 50 and 70 ng/mL to add years to your life and dramatically lower colon cancer and chronic disease risk.

0 Expanding waistlines may contribute to cancer

Fat progenitor cells may contribute to cancer growth by fortifying the vessels that provide needed blood to tumors, according to preclinical research findings by investigators at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

The results were reported in Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Studies of groups of people have demonstrated a link between obesity and certain cancers; however, the physiological causes have not been identified. The World Health Organization reports that in 2008 there were more than 1.4 billion obese adults in the world and that cancer claimed the lives of 7.6 million that year.

Some researchers have theorized that what obese people eat may affect cancer progression. However, although diet is an important factor, the direct effect of excess fat tissue on tumors has to be taken into consideration, said Mikhail Kolonin, Ph.D., senior author and associate professor at the Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at the Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine for the Prevention of Human Diseases at UTHealth.

The UTHealth scientists found a new link between tumor growth and obesity. They report that tumors emit a signal that attracts progenitor cells from white adipose tissue in mouse models of cancer. These cells in turn support the network of blood vessels that nourish tumors - a process called tumor angiogenesis.

“For the first time, we have demonstrated that excess fat is a key factor in cancer progression regardless of the diet contributing to the extra weight,” Kolonin said.

“In an attempt to understand how fat tissue fuels tumor growth, our laboratory has focused on a possible role of adipose stromal progenitor cells. These cells serve as stem cells in fat tissue. We have discovered that they expand in obesity and are mobilized into the systemic circulation,” Kolonin said.

“Our experiments show that fat progenitors are recruited by tumors, where they incorporate into blood vessels and become fat cells,” said Yan Zhang, M.D., Ph.D., the study’s lead author and research scientist at the UTHealth Medical School. “We found that obese animal fat progenitor cells recruited by tumors improved vascular function and, theore, increased survival and proliferation of cancer cells.”

Chieh Tseng, study author and graduate research assistant at the The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston, said, “Our work has the potential to help a lot of people. Currently, we are investigating the molecular mechanisms of fat progenitor cell homing to tumor. We are also screening for new molecules targeting the pathways through which cells traffic from fat tissue to promote tumor growth.”

“The next step in this research would be to inactivate fat progenitor cells in an effort to slow cancer progression,” said Kolonin, who is on the faculty of the graduate school and is the holder of the Jerold B. Katz Distinguished Professorship in Stem Cell Research at UTHealth.

Other UTHealth study authors include Alexes Daquinag, Ph.D., Felipe Amaya-Manzanares and Olga Sirin, Ph.D.

The study, which is titled “Stromal Progenitor Cells from Endogenous Adipose Tissue Contribute to Populations of Pericytes and Adipocytes in Tumor Microenvironment,” was supported by the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas and the American Cancer Society.

0 Aspirin blocks tumor growth in some colorectal cancer

Aspirin has the potential to block tumor growth in certain patients with colorectal cancer, according to an editorial in the Oct. 25, 2012 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine by a University of Alabama at Birmingham oncologist. In a study that appears in the same issue, researchers examined the use of aspirin in the treatment outcomes of patients with colorectal cancer.

Researchers collected experimental data from 964 patients with colorectal cancer, separating them into two groups based on the presence or absence of a mutation within the PIK3CA gene. The authors found that the use of aspirin after diagnosis in patients with the gene mutation was associated with a 46 percent reduction in overall mortality and an 82 percent reduction in colorectal cancer-specific mortality. In contrast, aspirin use in patients without the mutation did not affect either overall or colorectal-specific mortality.

“Approximately 17 percent of patients with colorectal cancer have a tumor that carries a mutated PIK3CA gene,” says Boris Pasche, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology. “Hence, more than one in every six patients with locally advanced colorectal cancer may benefit from this therapy.”

Every year, more than 140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die from the disease. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer in the United States and the fourth worldwide.

Over the past decade, little progress has been made in the treatment of locally advanced colorectal cancer, which is defined as cancer that has spread to nearby tissue or lymph nodes but has not metastasized, or spread to other organs. “While several new drugs have proven useful in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer, only one of them has demonstrated efficacy in locally advanced colorectal cancer,” Pasche says.

Pasche notes that the sample size for the current study was small. Only 66 patients with the PIK3CA mutation used aspirin after being diagnosed with colorectal cancer and only three of them died of colorectal cancer during the follow-up. “Although we are intrigued about these findings, they are still preliminary, and larger prospective studies need to be conducted,” says Pasche.

One cause of concern is that aspirin is known to increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and hemorrhagic strokes, Pasche notes. Although many Americans use baby aspirin daily to reduce their risk of heart disease, patients are generally only advised to do so when their cardiac risk is presumed to outweigh the risk of taking aspirin.

“We haven’t reached the point where we can make a big leap and advise patients to take aspirin to prevent cancer recurrence after surgery, but we are accumulating more information that helps us understand the role that aspirin can potentially play in cancer,” says Pasche. “As it is with any type of cancer treatment, we need to examine the benefits against the risks, but aspirin may well become one of the oldest drugs to be used as a 21st-century targeted therapy.

0 8 Causes of colon cancer to watch out for

8 Causes of colon cancer to watch out for - There are so many types of cancer experienced by humans in the modern era. Quite often, the cancer is also due to a family history that was once also exposed to the same type of disease. So you can be more alert, here are eight causes of colon cancer as reported Coloncancer.about.com.

1. Age

Age is a major factor that supports the occurrence of colon cancer. Does that mean that age causes colon cancer? Not directly. Only just turned 50 years of age or older, one in four people has polyps that lead to increased risk of cancer.

2. Alcohol

Research has shown that alcohol increases the risk of colorectal cancer. So should avoid alcoholic beverages or foods that contain alcohol content.

3. Diabetes

A study published in the journal Gastroenterology found that insulin dependence contribute to the development of colon cancer. In general, people with diabetes 40% more likely to develop colon cancer than people who do not have diabetes.

4. Food

Foods high in fat and cholesterol (especially from animal sources) can lead to colon cancer. Eat foods low in fiber also has been associated with an increased risk of colon cancer.

5. Environment
Research has shown that the environment can play a major role in the development of colon cancer. Where you live, whos around you, what is your job, and even when you work all can affect your risk of colon cancer.

6. Genetics

Researchers estimate that about 25% of colon cancer cases have some sort of genetic link. Examples of the most common genetic cause of colon cancer include mutations to the FAP (familial adenomatous polyposis) and HNPCC (non-polyposis colorectal cancer is hereditary).

7. Enteritis

Inflammatory bowel disease, often characterized by conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease, which can increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer. In general, the longer a person has inflammatory bowel disease, the greater the chance of developing colorectal cancer.

8. Lack of exercise

Research has shown that a sedentary lifestyle contributes to the development of colon cancer, including lack of exercise.

Here are eight causes of colon cancer to watch out for. Remember, prevention is better than cure!

0 Vitamin K Protects Against Arterial Calcification Cancer and Premature Aging

Few people realize the essential role that Vitamin K plays to prevent and reverse coronary artery calcification. This powerful nutrient has been shown to be the missing link in the development of a natural solution to keep calcium from depositing as deadly plaque in arterial walls.

Further evidence exists to confirm the role of Vitamin K in promoting programmed cell death in cancer cells that have multiplied out of control. Most people ingest insufficient quantities of this critical vitamin from their diet to receive any therapeutic benefit. Fortunately Vitamin K intake can be corrected by adding leafy green vegetables to your diet and supplementing as necessary.

Calcium Transforms to Arterial Plaque
Calcium is an essential mineral that is used to fuel hundreds of biochemical processes in our body and it is critical to rebuild our bones and teeth. The problem with calcium arises when the mineral remains in our blood and isn’t properly laid down to form new bone. As a consequence of poor diet and increasing blood pressure, micro cracks develop on the inner lining of our coronary arteries. In an attempt to repair the damage, oxidized LDL cholesterol attracts circulating calcium and other debris that becomes the deadly substance called plaque.

Vitamin K Controls Calcium, Reverses Coronary Plaque
Research has shown that Vitamin K escorts calcium out of the blood so it can be used to build bone and teeth. When insufficient Vitamin K is found to be circulating in the blood, calcium is picked up by soft tissue throughout the body. This is especially evident in the delicate endothelial lining of the arteries surrounding the heart. Tissue calcifies and normal function declines as cells begin to age at an accelerated rate. This eventually results in atherosclerosis and increased risk of a heart attack.

The result of a study published in the journal Atherosclerosis demonstrates that biologically active Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) can reverse the buildup of deadly plaque. The study concludes that K2 `is associated with reduced coronary calcification. Adequate menaquinone intakes could theore be important to prevent cardiovascular disease.` The K2 form of the vitamin is found in fermented soy products such as natto. Many people will need to supplement to achieve optimal levels of the vitamin.

Vitamin K Destroys Cancer Cells
Researchers are actively reviewing evidence that suggests that Vitamin K2 can be a powerful ally in preventing and even treating certain cancer cell lines. K2 has been shown to cause leukemia cells to self destruct in a process known as apoptosis. This is a natural cellular function that cancer cells can disable so they can grow unimpeded. Additional studies have shown similar inhibitory effects against myeloma and lymphoma cancer lines.

Vitamin K has also proven effective in lowering the risk from liver cancer. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, individuals at high risk for viral induced liver cancer were supplemented with Vitamin K2 and compared with a group that did not receive the nutrient. Less than 10% of the people receiving K2 developed liver cancer. 47% of those in the control group developed the devastating disease.

Vitamin K deficiency is rampant due to poor diet and insufficient knowledge about its many health benefits. Similar to Vitamin D, humans have evolved to utilize Vitamin K to prevent atherosclerosis and certain types of cancer. Research is beginning to uncover many essential benefits associated with this critical nutrient that we can use to control disease and slow the process of aging.

0 Green Tea Extract and Quercetin Boosts Cancer Fighting Capabilities

Green tea catechins such as EGCG have effectively been shown to increase metabolism as an aid to weight loss and have demonstrated a long history as a potent tool to fight many different types of cancer. Compounds in green tea act as powerful antioxidants that can promote apoptosis or programmed cell death, a mechanism missing in cancer cells that permits uncontrolled cell growth.

Researchers from Rutgers University have published the result of a studyin the journal Food and Function that explains a synergistic health-promoting relationship when green tea polyphenols and the flavonoid quercetin are provided through diet or supplementation. Quercetin helps boost the levels of green tea polyphenols in cancer cells to decrease methylation of their anti-cancer compounds, effectively increasing the green teas potency as a cancer fighting agent.

Quercetin Boosts Green Tea Antioxidant Capacity Two to Fourfold to Fight Cancer
In past studies, scientists have demonstrated that green tea catechins undergo extensive methylation after ingestion, lowering the effectiveness of the health-promoting compounds to shield against cancer proliferation. Quercetin is a known inhibitor of methylation in normal metabolism, and a study was conducting using mice to determine if the naturally occurring flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables could increase the potency of green tea catechins (specifically epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG).

Mice with severe combined immunodeficiency were given brewed green tea and a diet supplemented with 0.4 percent quercetin alone or in combination for a period of two weeks. Researchers determined that the supplemented group experienced a two to three times increase of total and non-methylated EGCG in the lung and kidney along with an increasing trend in the liver.

Drink Three to Five Cups of Fresh Brewed Tea Daily Along with Fruits and Vegetables to Ward off Cancer
The study found that combining quercetin with fresh brewed catechins from green tea increased the cellular adsorption of EGCG four times in lung cancer cells and two times in kidney cancer cells, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of this natural cancer fighting compound in vivo. Additionally, quercetin decreased methylation of green tea polyphenols, which would otherwise limit their chemopreventive potential.

The research team concludedthat “in order to have a maximum anticancer effect, green tea or green tea extract should be used together with quercetin.” They noted that green tea catechins exhibit higher antioxidant potential than either vitamin C or E, and indicated that consuming the beverage was associated with reduced risk for a number of forms of malignancy including skin cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer and bladder cancer. Three to five cups of fresh-brewed green tea daily combined with quercetin from fruits and vegetables or supplementation are recommended to synergistically boost the cancer fighting abilities of EGCG catechins.

0 Exercise related changes in estrogen metabolism may lower breast cancer risk

Changes in estrogen breakdown, or metabolism, may be one of the mechanisms by which aerobic exercise lowers a womans breast cancer risk, according to data published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

"Observational studies suggest physical activity lowers breast cancer risk, but there are no clinical studies that explain the mechanism behind this," said Mindy S. Kurzer, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minnesota in Saint Paul. "Ours is the first study to show that aerobic exercise influences the way our bodies break down estrogens to produce more of the good metabolites that lower breast cancer risk."

Kurzer and her colleagues conducted the Women in Steady Exercise Research (WISER) clinical trial, which involved 391 sedentary, healthy, young, premenopausal women. They randomly assigned the women to two age-matched, body mass index-matched groups: a control group of 179 women and an intervention group of 212 women.

While women in the control group continued a sedentary lifestyle for the entire study period, women in the intervention group performed 30 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise five times a week for 16 weeks. Aerobic exercises included the treadmill, stair stepper or elliptical machine. The researchers adjusted the workout intensity for each individual so that the maximal heart rate was uniform among all participants.

Eighty-six percent of participants from the control group and 78 percent from the intervention group completed the study.

The researchers collected 24-hour urine samples on three consecutive days prior to study initiation and on three consecutive days at the end of the study. Using a state-of-the-art technique called liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectroscopy, they measured the amount of three parent estrogens, E1, E2 and E3, and nine of their breakdown products called metabolites, in the participants urine samples. According to Kurzer, estrogen metabolism favoring the production of a metabolite called 2-hydroxyestrone (2-OHE1) over one called 16alpha-hydroxyestrone (16alpha-OHE1), which results in an increase in the 2-OHE1/16alpha-OHE1 ratio, has been linked with a reduction in breast cancer risk.

She and her colleagues found that aerobic exercise led to an increase in the amount of 2-OHE1 and a decrease in the amount of 16alpha-OHE1, which led to a significant increase in the 2-OHE1/16alpha-OHE1 ratio. There were no changes in the 2-OHE1/16alpha-OHE1 ratio in the urine of control group participants.

"Exercise, known to favor fitness and improve heart health, is also likely to help prevent breast cancer by altering estrogen metabolism," said Kurzer. "It is very important, however, to decipher the biological mechanisms behind this phenomenon."

In collaboration with researchers at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Kurzer is conducting similar studies in women with a high risk for breast cancer.

0 Beware heart failure can increase the risk of cancer

Beware, heart failure can increase the risk of cancer - Turns heart failure and cancer risk are related. At least thats what was discovered by researchers in Minnesota. Their latest research shows that people with heart failure are more at risk of getting cancer.

Yet these findings do not necessarily indicate evidence that heart failure, which occurs when the heart fails to pump enough blood throughout the body, can cause cancer. Scientists said it will conduct further studies to clarify the relation.

"People do not consider the link between heart failure and cancer, at least they do not expect to get cancer after diagnosis of heart failure," said researcher Dr. Adrian Hernandez of Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, as reported by Reuters.

But Dr Sudhir Kushwaha, researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester explains that the association of these two diseases are quite reasonable. This is because the organs are deprived of blood and oxygen due to heart failure might run into problems. Kushwaha emphasizes that heart failure patients should always be vigilant about any new symptoms that appear.

The results obtained after the researchers observed 961 patients with heart failure with people who do not have heart disease. After eight years, 244 people were still in the study diagnosed with various cancers.

After considering various factors such as the risk that participants held the weight and smoking habits, Kushwaha and colleagues found that patients with heart failure have a 68 percent chance of developing cancer is higher than participants who did not have heart failure.

Kushwaha research group revealed several reasons that could explain the link they found. Some heart medications can increase the risk of cancer, or stress, and inflammation of heart failure can also lead to cancer because the organ is starved of oxygen. In addition, the frequency of screening performed by patients with heart failure are also considered to be the cause.

0 Moderate alcohol intake and cancer the role of under reporting

A large US cohort study in 129,987 persons suggests that the apparent increased risk of cancer among light-moderate drinkers is substantially due to underreporting of intake.

Although experts agree that heavy consumption of alcohol is related to increased risk of several cancer types, the role of light-to-moderate drinking is less clear, said Dr Arthur Klatsky of Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, Oakland, CA, USA. Some studies have suggested there is a connection, while others have found no link.

The results of the new analysis suggest that any apparent relationship between cancer risk and light-to-moderate drinking, meaning up to 2 standard sized drinks per day for men and one for women, may be largely an artifact of under-reporting—that is, lying about drinking amount.

"If some heavy drinkers answer surveys saying that they only drink lightly, the effects of heavy drinking then appear to be related to light-to-moderate intake," Dr Klatsky explained. "Our analysis inferentially supports this factor in our study population and it is probably applicable to most studies, as under-reporting of alcohol consumption is surely prevalent."

"There are plenty of reasons why people need to avoid heavy drinking, but these do not generally apply to light drinking," Dr Klatsky said. "All concerns about the risks of light drinking need to be balanced by the evidence that persons at risk of heart disease benefit from lighter alcohol drinking. This --with plenty of exceptions-- means most persons over 50."

0 Teens Self Breast Check for Early Detection of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a very scary for women. In The World is the cancer with the highest number of people with number two after cervical cancer. Breast cancer incidence will increase in the future. This cancer can affect anyone, especially those who have multiple risk factors such as not married, obesity, family history, hormone therapy gets old as well as radiation in the chest area. Because of uncertain causes, prevention is difficult to do as well as the difficult course of the disease is thought to make the dreaded cancer, especially women

The signs and symptoms of common cancers such as breast lumps are not breast pain or lump in the armpit, bleeding or discharge from the nipple, change in color or flavor when touched on the breast skin or nipple such as the formation of dimples or wrinkles or red rash, and change in the size or shape of the breast. If found in the early stages, which typically are sized ketch and get proper treatment, the cure rate will be higher. This is the attempt to breast self-examination (BSE) is an effective way of finding a tumor early. Patients sometimes accidentally discovered the disease, there is even research that around 90% of these cancers are found with BSE. Thus it would be of great significance when BSE more emboldened against women especially those over 30 years old (Cancer Age) is expected to be much captured early cancer cases.

In the developed countries to do breast self-awareness is quite high, so that new cases could have been caught early. In Indonesia, most people who come to the doctor at an advanced stage. Reluctance adult women see her before the onset of symptoms leading to an advanced stage of cancer and the influence of religion and eastern cultural values that make women reluctant to be examined by male health workers, the ability and willingness of early detection is absolutely necessary. As a teenager who would grow up, especially teenage girls should also be able to perform breast self-examination.

For early detection of breast cancer, are advised to do BSE every month and a clinical examination to the doctor every year. As for the 40-year-old who had a mammogram a year is recommended once a year. There are three (3) important step in doing BSE, namely:

Examination in front of a mirror.
  • Stand as usual in front of the mirror, take a pose like the picture
  • Note the symmetry of both breasts, normal breast would look symmetrical between the right and left
  • Then lift your arms over your head, see if there are any changes in breast shape, swelling, indentations, or changes in each nipple. Breast swelling is not normal, no indentation

Examination of touch in a standing position.
  • Perform palpation in both breasts in turn. To do a check on the right breast, lift your right arm to the back of the head, then use your fingers to do a left hand. Take steps instead to examine the left breast.

Examination of conjecture when you lie.
  •  Lie on a hard surface.

While doing a check on the right breast, place a pillow under your right shoulder. Then place your right arm behind your head. Align the left hand fingers on the right breast, and press gently in a circular motion clockwise. Start at the very top of the right breast (12 oclock position), and then move toward 10 oclock and so on, until the return to the 12 oclock position. After that, move your fingers about 2 cm close to the nipple. Continue twisting motion as before until the entire breast, including the nipple has been checked.
Do the same thing on the left breast.
Correct BSE technique must use third knuckle of your middle finger, not the tip of the finger. You are strongly encouraged to repeat the circular motion with his knuckles, along with a little emphasis. But overemphasis can lead to pressure on the ribs and will feel like a lump.

Breast self-examination should be done once a month. Women who are menstruating should perform the examination on day 5 to day 7 after the first day of menstruation, when their breasts were slack and feels softer. Get used to conduct regular inspections of each month. The goal is that you become "familiar" with your own breasts. If you are not experiencing menstrual cycle, choose one date in each month and always do a double check on that date.
If you find a lump or change in the breast that makes restless, immediately consult a doctor. If the doctor informed that the results of the examination showed no abnormalities but still remain unsettled may request a second opinion from a specialist.

Medical colleges teach students that the person is merely a body. however the mind has the facility to cure the body. By definition, psychoneurotic suggests that a mixture of mind, or soul and body.

The soul creates the illness, however the body suffers. If the psyche creates the illness, the sole thanks to cure its through the psyche. it is a terribly easy formula: treating the seed of the matter.

Since there is no cure for this disease, life expectancy for most mesothelioma patients ranged between four and 18 months after diagnosis of mesothelioma is known for sure. Although there is no cure to date, some patients who are diagnosed early mesothelioma can be given a combination of aggressive therapy, such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Combination therapy, known as multimodality therapy, currently has the best chance to prolong the life of the patient.

The studys authors explain, "Gene methylation led to the development of malignant tumors in several tumor [malignant mesothelioma] are histologically divided into 3 subtypes, namely, epithelioid, sarcomatoid, and biphasic type, and it shows that mesothelin expression is restricted to epithelioid type and the epithelioid component of biphasic MM type (malignant mesothelioma). However, the mechanism of expression regulation has not been clarified. "
